September 2016 - Welcome Back!

September 2016 - Welcome Back!

Welcome back everyone!

We have made it through our first week of registration and it was great to see all the students returning ready to get back to work. It’s always an extremely busy time of year but an exciting time as well!

This year our district theme is Merciful Hearts - Mercy that Welcomes. Pope Francis declared a Year of Mercy from December 2015 to November 2016. He challenged us with an invitation to love, kindness, and generosity. Throughout this year we will be working with our students to help them understand what it means to be welcoming and accepting of all people around us.

We are excited about moving forward with our new three-year vision that was approved by the Board of Trustees at our June meeting.

Vision statement: Yellowknife Catholic Schools will strive to provide faith-based, engaging, collaborative, innovative learning environments that promote inquiry as a means to develop versatile and involved learners that are advocates of their personal learning journey.

Our goal is to develop “Educated, Innovative, Empowered Learners”. In order to do this we will continue to focus on literacy and numeracy skill development as well as technology in the classroom. Check out our website for more details about our vision for the future, including our action plan.

On September 7th at 7:00pm in St. Pat’s Drama room, we will be holding a public viewing of a film entitled “ Most Likely to Succeed”. This will provide you an opportunity to see where education should be headed in the future. We began our school year with having staff view this film and we received many positive comments about it.

Education continues to change all around us but the question is “are we making changes that address the students of today”. Our learners are very different from what they were even ten years ago. Over the next three years we will be providing professional development for our staff that will help them in moving forward to provide student centred learning for our students.

We have a vacancy on our Board of Trustees due to Simon Taylor having to step down in June. Simon has been an excellent trustee and Board Chair for the past seven years. A call for expression of interest in this position is open until September 9th at 4:00. Please see our website for more details. Our hope is to have this position filled for our September 21st Board meeting.

We look forward to continuing to work with your children and helping them become “Educated, Innovative, Empowered Learners”. Feel free to contact your school administration if you have any questions or concerns throughout the year.
